New Energy Boosts New Development

Jiangsu boasts abundant renewable resources, one of its most characteristic features. Jiangsu has a coastline of 954 kilometers and approximately 66.7 km sq of tidal land, accounting for 1/4 of the total tidal land in China. With its vast coastal waters, relatively flat submarine region, and a water depth generally less than 15 m, the area is relatively unaffected by typhoons. The annual output of crop straws is more-or-less maintained at around 40 million tons, ranking 4th in the nation. The annual average sunlight hours are between 1400 and 3000 h, setting the annual estimated theory reserve at 1130 to 1530 kWh/m2. In recent years, Jiangsu has been adhering to an energy utilization development guideline of "clean and low-carbon, safety and high efficiency". Complying with the general trend of energy structure transitions, Jiangsu's energy utilization direction is firmly set towards "green and low-carbon", in terms of adjusting the structure of energy production and consumption. Combining provincial and regional conditions, Jiangsu mainly relies on wind and voltaic power generation, using biomass and water power generation as a subsidiary, so as to step up the development of renewable energy. Notable results have been achieved so far.

2. Wind Power Generation

3. Biomass Power Generation

4. Pumped Storage Power Station

Jiangsu is taking the lead in photovoltaic power generation.

Jiangsu attaches equal significance to the development of distributed and centralized photovoltaic power generation. Priority has been given to support the construction of large-scale distributed photovoltaic power generation in industrial enterprises and industrial park zones where land prices are higher. Much emphasis has been put on developing distributed photovoltaic power generation using a variety of roof resources in urban and rural areas, in order to provide a power supply that is "mainly self-sufficient with access to the surplus through connection to the grid". Through this process, Jiangsu is making full use of its coastal tidal land, subsiding coal mining land and other space resources to build centralized photovoltaic power stations. In 2016, the newly installed photovoltaic capacity reached 1.23 million kW, and the total installed capacity climbed to 5.46 million kW, ranking first in eastern China and the fifth across the nation. In addition, the installed capacity of distributed photovoltaic power generation totaled 1.73 million kW, ranking second across the nation.

Jiangsu takes a leading role in wind power generation.

Jiangsu has fully leveraged its coastal wind power resources to vigorously impel the development of offshore wind power in Yancheng and Nantong, and boost the coordinated development of coastal onshore wind power as well as inland low speed wind power. In 2016, the newly installed capacity of wind power reached 1.49 million kW, and the total installed capacity surged to 5.61 million kW, ranking the 10th across the nation. Among others, the installed capacity of offshore wind power totaled 1.12 kW, first place in the nation.

Jiangsu is leading the nation in biomass power generation.

Jiangsu's guiding biomass principle involves "making overall plans by taking all factors into consideration; adjusting measures to local conditions; comprehensive utilization; diversified development; government supporting and market driving". In particular, Jiangsu is making innovations in mechanisms such as biomass direct-fired generation, biomass gasification generation, and the direct utilization of methane in an effort to step up the comprehensive utilization of energy. At the end of 2016, the grid-tied installed capacity of biomass power generation (including garbage power) stood at 1.25 million kW, ranking the second across the nation.

Hydroelectric generation is developing steadily.

With an ethos of "integrated planning and rational distribution", efforts have been redoubled to speed up the construction of pumped storage power stations in Liyang and Jurong, and to step up the preliminary work of constructing the pumped storage power station in Lianyungang. At the end of 2016, the installed capacity of hydroelectric power reached 1.15 million kW, with pumped storage power station totaling 1.10 million kW.

New Energy Benefits New Life

Available solar energy heating system

A solar energy heating system converts solar energy into thermal energy which can be used to heat cold water to a higher temperature, meeting demand for hot water in production and people's daily life. Based on its structure, solar energy heating systems can be divided into integral solar water heaters and split solar water heaters, which are mainly used in the form of household split heat collection and heat supply, centralized heat-collection and split household heat-supply, or centralized heat-collection and heat-supply. The solar energy heating systems in Jiangsu are mainly installed on the roof or balcony wall.

Solar energy water heating systems can be used in a wide range of residential and public buildings, especially hospitals, swimming centers and other public facilities with relatively large demand for hot water. However, it is of great importance to integrate each component of solar energy heating systems into the building to maximize efficiency and reliability.

Available Ground Source Heat Pump System

Ground source heat pump systems use geothermal resources in the shallow layer of the earth for heating and cooling as a form of energy conversion and to achieve the transfer from low-grade heat energy to high-grade heat energy. It is mainly applied in a building's heat supply, air conditioning systems and domestic hot water supplies. Compared with traditional air conditioning systems, the ground source heat pump system requires 20% more in terms of investment, yet 40% less in annual operation costs.

As Jiangsu is located in a region with distinct summers and winters, the earth temperature and soil quality are relatively suitable for the installation of ground source heat pumps. In addition, the technology is applicable to all civil buildings with space for the geological tube heat exchanger.

Available Water Source Heat Pump System

Water source heat pump systems can be divided into two categories: the open-loop and close-loop heat pump system. Crisscrossing rivers and lakes spread throughout the region provide Jiangsu with favorable conditions for the utilization of earth surface water source heat pumps.

Subject to water sources, it can also be divided into different types, such as lake, river, sea, sewage and underground water source.

Building Regional Power Station

A wide range of power stations have been set up in conjunction with the building of Jiangsu Green Building Demonstration Area. Some have formed a regional function pattern based on river water and sewage source heat pumps, while combing distributed energy resources and urban thermoelectricity supply.

Currently, nearly a variety of 30 regional power stations have been built, with a service floor space of over 20 million m sq. Regional power stations are space-saving, and effectively achieve the integration of resources. Specialized property management also makes comprehensive quality services accessible for building proprietors. Regional power stations are suitable for projects with centralized energy demands in a certain region, such as the urban UBD regions with dense buildings, high-tech industrial parks, university campuses, hospital building groups and large-scale transportation hubs.

New Energy Heralds New Future

Jiangsu has successfully implemented a new plan for energy industry revitalization, raising the development of new energy industry to a strategic level. At present, the new energy industry has become an emerging economic growth point for Jiangsu. We believe that, under the correct guidance of the provincial government and a strong philosophy in boosting the integration and development of industrial chains, new energy development in Jiangsu province will demonstrate even more distinct regional features, exert further industrial competitiveness and continue to be the regional economic engine of Jiangsu. Collectively, remarkable contributions can be made to the building of a brand new, distinguished Jiangsu characterized by "prosperity, beauty and advanced technology".
