CO2 Capture and Storage for Enhanced Oil Recovery (CCS-EOR)

CNPC is committed to green and low carbon development, and has always been active in responding to global initiatives for cutting greenhouse gas emissions and addressing climate change. In China, we take the lead in exploring and practicing CCS-EOR, and have conducted pilot tests and industrial application at a number of blocks in Jilin Oilfield since 1999. Remarkable economic and social benefits have been achieved in enhancing oil recovery of non-marine heterogeneous low permeability reservoirs, while eliminating carbon emissions. The project in Jilin Oilfield has become a good example for CCS-EOR. CCS-EOR refers to: 1) Separating associated CO2 from produced natural gas and/or capturing CO2 from other sources such as power plants; 2) Inject the CO2 into a reservoir to mix with the in-site crude oil in a miscible status to lower viscosity and increase mobility; 3) Extract the crude oil and CO2 mixture to the ground for treatment. The separated CO2 is re-injected into the reservoir to repeat the process, enhancing the ultimate recovery rate of crude oil. CO2 is sealed underground till the reservoir is abandoned. In such a cycle, CO2 can be stored underground permanently and its emissions to the atmosphere can be eliminated.
